The internet has, unsurprisingly, been aflame over the past few days with discussions, musings and out-and-out lust for the iphone.
Hmmmm. I'm still not sure. don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't love nice new toys: I do! But I've been through a PDA phone phase....and came right out the other side. I just liked my mobile to be, well, like a mobile phone. To feel like a phone, to look like one, to work like one. It's that last one that's the killer, for me: does it WORK like a mobile? In other words, can you be mobile with it? And that's mobile as in "away from your desk/office/home/country for SEVERAL DAYS"
So, for the past year or so, I've reverted to using one of these, and I absolutely love it (I'm not alone either, check those reviews!) It's simply the only phone that does what it says on the tin. PLUS, the battery is still amazing, here's a radical concept for a future phone: one that you can take on holiday for a week, without a charger, and when you get back it's still working.

I've got a Motorola Razr V3i which I bought (whup, whup, nerd alert!) because I quite liked the idea of a flip-top phone that was a bit like the old communicators on Star Trek. It's also the first non-Nokia mobile I've ever had - and to be honest it's a cracking little phone. It hasn't scratched, does everything I ask of it, and despite being told otherwise the software isn't clunky at all.
That said, I'm really lusting after an iPhone. I like the fact that it'll allow me to cut down on the number of separate devices I have to carry around with me, and the fact that it'll integrate seamlessly with my Mac is a bonus too.
I've got a Nokia N95 because quite simply it does everything I need a phone to do. Makes calls, text, MMS, email, real web (not just WAP), 3G, WiFi... then adds GPS (including mapping), 5mp Camera (which is no competitor to a real camera but it's perfectly usable, but takes REALLY good video for a phone 640x480, 30fps), 2gb MP3 player (with memory card)...
In fact, it's every thing the iPhone is and more, and it's been around a few months already.
The only drawback to it is the exact reason you'll hate it, battery life, I'm quite a heavy user (at least 20 text and a couple of hours WiFi or 3g a day) and I struggle to get two days out of a full charge. If I'm using it all the time for WiFi and MP3 etc that drops to a day. You can of course buy extra batteries for a reasonable price (unlike the iPhone, which has a non-serviceable internal battery), since it's a Nokia they're easy to get too, but that's not really a solution.
My verdict: If you want to not have to carry 5 or so devices the N95 is perfect, if you need those devices to last more than 36 hours or so on a charge, look elsewhere, but I don't think the iPhone will help with that either...
