Skateboarding unlocked my mind

All these years later, I'm only now starting to understand how much of my life has been shaped by Skating, not just by Skating itself - but by reactions to it and how I looked for the same creativity everywhere.

Skating taught me that talent wasn't everything - style was. Skills and tricks are fine, but there's an attitude and a flow, which only the greatest skaters have. They display that attitude, even when rolling along, not doing much at all. The video above, of Antwuan Dixon, is a case in point: it's amazing in terms of tricks - hammers, everywhere. But more than that, he is the epitome of a style and flow which is at once effortless yet completely breathtaking to watch. At around 55 seconds, he lays down a nose slide to 270. Every time I see it, I'm stopped in my tracks. It's like he's not even aware of what he's doing or how good he is. He is just....there, in the moment.

Ever since I stepped on a board, I've been looking for those moments constantly. Not just in Skaters, either: in musicians, TV presenters, actors, friends, and lovers. Do they have that flow, that sense of being at ease, that creative grace? It's like a door you can open to let your true self shine out.

Next on the list

I need to skate, again. Not just that, but I need to work on my frontside kickturns. I need to style some things out. Fall back in love with the flow. If I don't I'll just end up dreaming about it.

Skating again...

And I love it. I crept out of the house early this morning, around 6.45. Swished silently through the Queens Park Estate, hopped a passing 452 to Kensal Rise, then it was a languorous carving rush down Keslake Road, a slight squiggle through some back streets, then powering down the side of Queens Park itself. That early in the morning, you can dodge the traffic (what there is of it) fairly easily, and you can stretch out and enjoy the tarmac as it rushes beneath your wheels. Can't think of a better way to start the day.

New house, new tarmac.

So, I'm moving on. Brighton is no longer my home town, and all my possessions are beginning their trek back up the M23 (or at least the process has started, the mother lode should arrive back in London by the end of the month)
It makes me look back, ruefully, on the happy times I had on the South coast, and above all, the feeling of release I used to get from leaving the city behind and heading to the calm and quirky charm that only Brighton can give you. I packed up my vinyl yesterday, into the same boxes which it travelled down to Brighton in, all those years ago. A very odd sensation. So, I've rented out my flat in Shepherd's Bush, and have travelled a few miles up the road, to Queen's Park. It means I'm still near the bright lights of Westfield, still near the Jez for beers, still near to the Westway!
And it means there's new delights as far as skating goes. The streets around my new place are smooth and quiet, so I broke out the longboard this morning, for a quick skate. Wonderful. I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but if I don't skate for a while, I start dreaming about it, so this should have stopped the dreams for a bit. The board is quicker than ever: put Bones Swiss into the wheels, and it's as fast as hell. However, still getting a bit of "bearing peel" with the wheels (Krypto classic 70's) Anyone else get this? Obviously, I'm using it for some pretty intense pumping carves, so the cores on the wheels aren't doing their job, but what other wheels could I use? Suggestions?

Monday's coming like a train on wheels...

Well, a pretty sunny train, actually. Today sees London once again bathed in Sunlight - the view from the balcony this morning is truly spectacular, and makes me think Summer is nearly here (even if it isn't, really)
It makes me want to skate, that's for sure - I'm going to try and contact some fellow old farts from the MAS Forum to see if there's a Meanwhile expedition next weekend. I've tried my best to adapt to new Popsicle boards, but my trusty Santa Cruz Everslick (from 1990!) has the most functional shape I've ever ridden, and the wheelbase is absolutely perfect for me, so I'll just update the wheels, and away we go.
Time to think about getting ready for work, need to source some downloads for the "download of the day" feature I do on-air, and listen to this tune again, whilst marvelling at all that glorious sun.....

One more for today.....

I need to skate again.
Soon.
Especially at Meanwhile II. Look! It's been transformed!

It was nearly 20 years ago.....

...but here's what my life looked like back then. I was working in Slam City, when we co-hosted this skate night at the Limelight, in London. Back then, to put a mini-ramp in a club was quite revolutionary, I seem to recall it making the evening news here in town. Anyway, I think that's my disembodied hand in the photo at the bottom of the page, the shot was taken by my then boss, Paul Sunman, and IIRC, we were standing up by the VIP lounge, where we'd been having a beer with Kevin Staab. I managed to drink way too much beer and twist my ankle on a rock fakie, but apart from that, a truly great night. There's more here, and the rest of the site is highly recommended for all you old-schoolers out there.

Wow!

This may only be of interest to the Skaters out there...but here goes anyway: Stevie Caballero has a blog. Hurrah!

Damn!

Look, here's my first ever "Pig" deck. I bought a second-hand one of these from the old Alpine Action on Notting Hill Gate, sometime in 1982. It was delaminated at the nose and tail, but was only a fiver. A bit of TLC, not to mention some Plastic Padding and a vice, and it was up and running again. The Cab "Bearing" deck was the first Powell deck to have a concave (a nice little spoon to the nose) and was such a nice board to ride. I kept mine for about 18 months, before swapping it with Steve Douglas, for a lovely Powell "Gelfand".
This board in the photo sold on ebay recently, for a little more than a fiver.
It went for..................

$2,250.

Owowowowowow :(

One of the many legacies of my years as a skater is a knackered wrist. When you're young, you tend to think of yourself as being invincible, and I was no different. I never used wrist guards, and being left-handed, every time I bailed- I stuck out my left hand. Result: I sprained it more times than I care to remember. All well and good, but the legacy of all of those injuries keeps coming back to haunt me. I spent most of yesterday completely unable to move my left wrist, and in a huge amount of pain. The odd thing being, this normally happens when the weather turns cold and damp. The fact that 'm in this much pain, at the end of August, means that's it for summer.

OMG.

I've NEVER seen anything like this. Worst slam EVER, and he walks away.......

Seriously: this is absolutely superhuman stuff. This is akin to falling out of a window on the 5th floor, then just getting up and walking away. I have no idea how or why he's still alive, but I thank god that he is. Just watch the end of the video as his shoes fly off with the power of the impact and ask yourself "Would I have walked away?" I know I wouldn't.
Respect.
